"I really welcomed the opportunity to spend two weeks at the residency taking up the studio nearest the horse’s stables. I’d been featuring equestrian themes in some of my recent paintings leading up to the residency, so spending some time with them up close and making drawings to reference was helpful for my practise. Horses aside, the other wildlife and birds local to the farm and surrounding areas of Tunworth and Upton Grey were a sight to behold. Living in London, one can often go hours of the day without hearing a single bird call, albeit marred by the sounds of traffic and chaos. I was particularly drawn to the circling kite birds who glided high above the fields seeking out small prey.
During my two weeks, I also managed to develop some new ceramic pieces in terracotta. Favouring hand and slab building techniques, I made a series of pots styled as Oast houses – an agricultural vernacular staple of the Kent countryside (where I am from originally).

Overall, the peace and silence of the residency installed a profound sense of calm and focus in my approach to my work and I was very grateful for this."

Sam is a British artist from Maidstone who works in London. He has a graduate of MA in Painting (2020) at the Royal College of Art and is part of the college’s permanent collection. Recent solo exhibitions include ‘Nimby’ (2024) at Andrew Reed Gallery Miami, The Right Honourable at The Shophouse Hong Kong (2024) and The Best of Bees (2023) at Quip and Curiosity, Cambridge, UK.

Sam recently exhibited in group exhibitions with Bernheim London, The Royal Institute of British Architecture and MOM Seattle. His paintings explore the synthesis distinctly British populaces have with their built surroundings and their contributing socio-political inclinations.
