"Xenia Retreat is a unique & much valued oasis in this time of radical uncertainty and recalibration.
Post Pandemic amid financial crisis many artists are facing a particularly tough time. Most of us tend to have fluctuating and unreliable incomes at the best of times and with property and studio price rises and grant cuts a period of uninterrupted focus can be the most valuable gift. At the end of a bleak winter, the generosity and support from all at Xenia provided a unique time for reassessment and grounding.
The daily appreciation of the natural surroundings, the familiarity with a specific morning pheasant in conversation with its favourite duck, the vast skies performing Tiepolo-esque son e lumiere.
Casual collisions with the deer, eye to eye contact feeling like Alice and the Fawn in ‘the wood where things have no name.
An unexpected series of drawings exploded in the studio - Pinocchio and commedia del’arte doused in violence and abuse all with a proliferation of green! The prep for an upcoming film ‘Wool and Water’ [working title], a vignette from ‘Through the Looking -Glass’, evolved slowly like the cautious snow drops and daffodils, steered by the weather and political climate.
A sheep knitting in the grounds and rowing on the lake was spotted. Glimpses of The White Queen flying through the woods ........
Part Two and The Miracle to follow shortly!
A Very much appreciated Beginning away from the abrasiveness of London life.. The respectful sociability of All the Roden family, friends and community at Xenia are unforgettable.
I have no words for my appreciation for every single one of them.
Thank You ALL"
