To start the year in a place I felt safe to let go and explore my art practise in a different way than what’s possible in my normal life, was truly soul nourishing.
During my time at Xenia I was able to hear my thoughts and to access a way into my work that’s not been open before. The mixture of being close to nature and having the time and space to reflect made this possible. My January stay brought a mix of crisp clear sunny winter weather with frost visible during morning walks, and other days with the storm Isha roaring outside the studio. All fuelled the experimentation and mark making happening inside the studio.
An extension of my visual language emerged during my time at Xenia through through experimentation and play.
Back in London, I am continuing to develop my new series of work started at Xenia taking the form of paintings, etchings and monoprints. I left Xenia with full hart, new friendships and memories of the landscape that will stay with me for a long time.
Thank you Bianca, Stuart and the whole Xenia team, I am immensely grateful for my time at Xenia."

About
Maria Hatling is a painter living and working in London. She was born in South Korea, but grew up in Norway. Her work is concerned with human connection, identity and the importance of community, subjects explored in her work over a period of time.
Educated in design, Maria’s journey to painting has taken her through many different mediums, but one constant has fuelled her creativity. Maria’s interest lies in striking a balance between the free expression of colours and mark-making fuelled by human emotion and finding moments of stillness. Pockets of the same colour combined with the use of her signature dots representing clarity and focus, create elements of order to otherwise vibrant and dynamic inner landscapes. This evolving idea of expressing the inner and outer worlds of one's self is tied to Maria’s endeavour to understand and embrace her mixed cultural identities.
Maria’s work has been exhibited in the UK and Norway, but so far, the main focus has been on developing her studio practice and evolving as a painter. She has arrived at a highly distinctive personal visual language.
