I went to Xenia Creative Retreat after being stuck in the city during the pandemic for years, and I was desperately seeking some connection to nature.
I wanted some space to spend time with my own thoughts in the quiet and see what kind of effect it would have on my practice and process. In my time, I found the change in environment and the increase in privacy had a big effect on my work. I generated a lot of ideas for pieces down the line as it was easier for me to make space in my mind for new concepts, and the environment was inspiring. The long walks in the fields and woods also left so much time to think and reflect, I spent the first week just absorbing everything around me and feeling quite emotional without the noise of the city. The live/work studio on the farm had everything I needed and was extremely comfortable - I slept well and had a nice cool place during the summer to work on a few paintings. I also had an amazing time connecting with the other artists and everyone who worked at the residency. We had many meals together, went on long walks, and did so much foraging of elderflower, wild garlic, and wild strawberries! There were many studio visits and late night conversations about life and our artwork, and friendships were definitely made. Bianca, Lucy, and Jaye were extremely accommodating and if I ever had a question or a problem they were quick to address. The village nearby is very sweet and has an excellent pub where we had several delicious roasts! Overall I was incredibly grateful to have this experience and would absolutely return, it is so conveniently located near London but possesses a completely different energy!"
