About
Joe Madeira is a Portuguese-born artist based in London. He holds an MPhil from the Royal College of Art, where his research explored identity, representation and the construction of the self through photography and self-portraiture. Before focusing on his artistic practice, he worked in graphic design and later founded Cabin Gallery, an artist-led contemporary art space in London.
Working across drawing, sculpture, installation and digital media, Joe uses the body as both subject and metaphor. Drawing forms the backbone of his practice: a way of thinking through ideas, testing forms and allowing unexpected associations to emerge. His work explores masculinity, queer identity and transformation through fragmented and hybrid figures that blur the boundaries between body and object, human and non-human, familiar and uncanny. Materials such as fabric, vinyl, hair and found objects are combined with processes of sewing, casting and prototyping to create works that oscillate between softness and strength, attraction and discomfort, humour and unease.
Recent works investigate the instability of identity and the body as a site of continuous negotiation and change. Through sculpture and installation, Joe creates hybrid forms and environments that question fixed ideas of masculinity, embodiment and belonging.
