During my residency at the @xeniacreativeretreat I took time to focus on painting and did a lot of unpacking of what has happened since the war started.
I was thinking a lot of the role of “the spectators”, those who aren’t for or against. This painting came from these questions.
The uncommitted. Who are they? Am I they?
Dante places them outside the gates of hell: the souls of the uncommitted, those who lived for themselves, and of the angels who were not rebellious against God nor faithful to Satan. Neither Heaven nor Hell would have them, they will be eternally stung by hornets and wasps, worms at their feet eat their blood and tears.
Quite an unpleasant way to pay for the status quo…
But even without all these religious insinuations, it is always a subtle line when you just remain safe and rational and when you cross it and become this “uncommitted being”.
I am very curious where the line is.
