Being a resident at the Xenia Creative Retreat has been an incredibly rewarding and thoughtful experience. The residency offered me the opportunity to step away from normality and take much needed time for quiet reflection on my current practice.
Working in a crowded studio in the metropolis of London sometimes feels like being a cog in an overworking machine, with no time for contemplation on the works you are making. The Xenia residency however offered me solitude and a time to reflect, without every-day distractions.
During my time at the residency, I had intended to make a series of small canvases responding to the idea of 'Xenia' and its historical and allegorical meanings of hosting and protection. Although I did this, I also spent an equal amount of time sketching, reading and walking. My mornings were always spent walking around the surrounding environment, where I would quietly consider the rolling landscape. The environment and its earthy colours eventually began to weave itself into my paintings; deep browns, yellow ochres and lilacs were formed. As well as motifs of fruit, branches, jugs of oil and bowls; symbols of exchange and hosting began to cover the studio walls.
The family and everyone at the residency embody perfectly the theme of Xenia; with the hosts providing a beautifully welcoming and safe environment to contemplate your practice. My residency proved to be an unforgettable and magical experience, something I will treasure for a long time.
Thank you!
