During my two week stay here I aimed to develop the painted photographs I have been working on for the last year or so. I took two large photographs (the same size as Pollock's Summertime) with me and a printer so that I could take photographs of the surrounding area, print them immediately and paint on them. The printer became more of a painting tool than I had anticipated. Playing with painting on photographic paper and then printing on the paintings as well as stopping prints halfway through has added a new dimension to the photographic works. It is these unforeseen moments that come out of making work in a new setting, the necessity of having a printer on-site, in the studio, made the printing become part of the process when it hadn't before.
The environment was a huge protagonist in the paintings created at Xenia, I would often spend the mornings walking, sketching and photographing and then use the studio to process some of what I had been drawn to. The two large pieces I worked on carried on some of these findings, be it in the use of pastel over the photograph (a process developed in the works on paper made here) or the ink line created form a homemade brush made from dried grass gathered on a walk. The studio findings as well as the rhythms, colour and forms of the surrounding nature crept into the paintings. Nature is often a driving force in the paintings but often seen through the lens of the city, it is framed or is seen in conjunction to something else, here that was different. Nature was contemplated in and of itself.
As well as providing an invaluable time spent away from normal responsibilities and distractions, the time spent with family here also proved to be an amazingly relaxing, joyous and rewarding time. Xenia really did provide the perfect combination of a relaxing and invigorating time, and hosted by the most generous welcoming
and lovely host I couldn't think of a more perfect antidote and end to 2020”
