Testimonial
My time at Xenia was a contemplative one. I mirrored the pace of the changing weather and the calm serenity of the surroundings. I was forcibly drawn into the wilderness, my hands often carrying residual fragments, reminders of nature’s bounty and trivialities.
For some reason Xenia felt greener, denser and more untouched than most isolated plots. This reasoning could be due to the immersive experience of seven wonderful weeks of engagement and solidarity. There are parallels to be drawn between a legion of artists confronting it anew and engaging with their practices outside of their comfort. A rare opportunity to be completely alone with materials and inner thoughts. The only interactions would be from the gracious residents and delightful hosts.
The generosity and support were immense during this time and also immeasurable. I was both cared for and enveloped. A diversity of animal life would breach this time too. I perpetually stayed active and was greeted by a multitude of visitors discovering Xenia’s creative hub in the wilderness. It was a platform to discover a new pathway - to overcome struggles and roadblocks. To mark a new discovery - to draw naively on pots without constraints or external pressure. I had an ample amount of space and time to purely associate with the task I gave myself and departed from whiteness of stoneware to a desired intricacy. I brushed colours into pores with a found conviction.
I reflected on the words of Angelo Mangiarotti - ‘ happiness is derived from honesty’. I have been propelled into new territory in every sense. Thank you XENIA, thank you Bianca, Stuart, Jaye, Lucy and Felipe, Jack and Rebecca. It was brilliantly magical and I remain eternally grateful.
